An office within DOE brought together widely disparate business,
science, and environmental interests in agriculture, power generation,
fuels, and chemicals, to explore pathways to a new, integrated bioenergy
and bioproducts industry. Hugely complex issues were involved, cutting
across energy, agricultural, transportation, and environmental sectors,
with major government policy implications. Generating a vision inspirational
enough to develop an alternative industry requires an extraordinary
level of commitment. How to capture and articulate the vision succinctly
and inclusively?
Solution
We provided co-facilitation, information management, and process
continuity throughout the 18-month-long roadmap development. Once
the vision had been formulated in principle, we structured the information,
then wrote and designed a concise brochure. The brochure has been
widely used to foster cooperation and inspire ongoing efforts to
share science and build a viable economic model. Subsequently, we
facilitated a series of workshops for bioenergy and bioproducts
industry stakeholders, to determine the pathway for technology R&D.
We then structured and wrote a succinct technology roadmap as a
companion to the vision brochure. In addition, we wrote a keynote
speech that the DOE Assistant Secretary delivered at an international
conference on bioenergy.

Advanced technologies not only boost production of oil and gas,
but also reduce environmental impacts. A DOE-commissioned study
told the story in solid data and detailed case histories. But DOE
wanted the story to be engaging and accessible for lay audiences
as well as for industry and policy insiders.
Solution
We provided graphic design and layout services as well as information
design, writing, and editing to create an inviting, visually sophisticated
report. Our fast-reading layers of information convey how the new
technologies benefit our national economy, environment, and quality
of life. Highly regarded by the oil and gas industries, this striking,
easy-to-navigate report was publicized with an intriguing oversized
poster and a quick-glance executive summary.

A Pittsburgh community development organization conducted an employment
survey of a working-poor neighborhood, generating detailed demographic
and economic statistical data. How to effectively transfer the findings
to local, regional, and national audiences, including both lay readers
and professionals in social welfare and urban planning and policy?
Solution
We designed and wrote a concise, tightly organized report, including
a summary of the findings and conclusions. Our descriptive captions
and graphic treatment of the data rendered the statistical detail
accessible to both general and specialized audiences.

A DOE office led an unprecedented industry-government collaboration
to develop a series of visionary technology roadmaps for the U.S.
building industry. As each industry segment completed its visioning
process, two challenges remained. First, how to compress months
of effort and information into a compelling and useful document?
Second, how to capitalize on the attention generated at the congressional
reception and media events celebrating the publication of these
roadmaps?
Solution
We supported the creation, development, and promotion of each
roadmap in the series to date. We co-facilitated visioning and roadmapping
workshops with diverse groups of industry participants, such as
builders, product manufacturers, industry organizations, researchers,
and code bodies. We then structured the content, wrote, and designed
a series of engaging, easy-to-follow reports, including separate
executive summaries. For the events, we created a series of high-impact,
oversized display panels that featured photos of high-performance
buildings throughout the U.S. A trio of these panels provided a
backdrop for speakers, while tabletop displays, fact sheets, and
a media kit provided more detail. We also developed and wrote all
media kit contents, including the news release, editorial backgrounder,
industry profile, testimonials, supporting fact sheets, and a CD
that provided the media with photographs and PDFs of the building
fact sheets.

For the National Science Foundation, an arresting and persuasive
brochure was needed to vividly present achievements and capabilities
of university-based science and technology centers to varied audiences.
Solution
Our award-winning brochure has inspired heightened awareness, interest,
and action from the client's target audiences of industry and government
research organizations.
